It's hard to find comparisons that don't involve the same people -- the small paperback of Goodman Beaver stories, the Annie Fantagraphics set (especially volume one), and maybe Wonder Wart-Hog in "The Nerds of November."

The first printing of THE MAD READER, by the way, has "What's My Shine?", the game-show version of the Army-McCarthy hearings, drawn by Davis. I'm not saying I got that one on the newsstand, mind you, though I did have a dream about ten years ago involving a little old newsstand owner who was so fiercely independent that she was still getting new ECs in every month.

Great piece!Kip Whttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12751319031224838771noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19947856.post-12245736944755711272008-06-02T20:27:00.000-07:002008-06-02T20:27:00.000-07:00Ahhh, yes. Went out and purchased the iBooks reprint of The Mad Reader back when I was 17...it must have defined at least half of my senior year of high school. Such fond memories.

Elder's artwork was definitely one of a kind, and this was definitely a wonderful tribute.Brycehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01037385922154683277noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19947856.post-81926549832367011012008-06-02T12:33:00.000-07:002008-06-02T12:33:00.000-07:00It's good to respect your Elders.
