Irv Spence's Cartoon Diary: June 26, 1944

This is the only time a day shows an alternate drawing done for it. Maybe the second one was made for the diary that Mrs. Spence saw.

Irv Spence's Cartoon Diary: June 23, 1944

I suspect this cartoon has something to do with how the artist's were made to feel when they took their union break. The ubiquitous Mr. Leo Harris and a couple of other suits wither the storyman Milt Schaffer, possibly Tony Rivera or Tony Pabian, effects artist Bob Bemiller and  Lovell Norman. "Al" could be Al Grandmain.

Irv Spence's Cartoon Diary: June 16, 1944

A. Arnold "Buddy" Gillespie was a visual effects artist at MGM Studios from 1924 to 1965. In 1943 and '44 he was assigned as an animator on director George Gordon's cartoons. (See prod. #s 103, 106, 108, and 113 at the link.)

"Tree Surgeon," one of George Gordon's MGM cartoons, with Arnold Gillespie's animation.

"Johnny Johnson" might be a reference to this musical.

And we have another appearance of the mysterious "availability certificate." I've yet to find out exactly what this was. Maybe it was something issued by the studio when employees we re-assigned.

Irv Spence's Cartoon Diary: June 13, 1944

From a commenter on the old blog: Sid Ising was my father's god father. He moved to northern California to start a peach farm. After a flood, he opened a bar on the Sacramento River at Steamboat Slough.

Herman, aka Sid, Ising was Rudy's brother. He was a camera operator at the MGM cartoon studio.
